The Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State Linguistic University (Armenia)

The Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State Linguistic University, the only one of its kind in Armenia, was officially opened in February 2009. Dalian University of Foreign Languages was entrusted with the administration of the institute by the International Chinese Language Council, the worldwide headquarters of Confucius Institutes, in July 2014.

The institute has twelve staff members, including nine Chinese and three Armenian directors. Over the past five years, substantial progress has been made in terms of Chinese instruction, the promotion of Chinese culture, the implementation of ICLC projects, and the editing of textbooks for local use. The institute currently manages four Chinese instruction sites with nearly 800 registered students. In addition to language classes, special enrichment courses such as martial arts and Qigong are also offered. Over a hundred Chinese cultural events were hosted, including international Chinese seminars, performances by artistic troupes, culture and art exhibitions, Chinese language days and other events. The institute organized visits from delegations of elementary and secondary school leaders and education officials to China. It also hosts the Chinese Bridge Contest, administers accredited tests of Chinese proficiency such as the HSK, and has overseen the publication of the first-ever Chinese textbooks for Armenian learners.

In April of 2011, the Confucius Institute had the honor of hosting Mr. Li Changchun, former member of the Standing Committee of the Politbureau of the CPC Central Committee and his entourage. A Confucius bust was presented to the institute as a gift, marking a momentous event in the history of the institute and China-Armenia education.

The Confucius Institute will continue its efforts to improve conditions for Armenian students to study Chinese language and culture, to establish programs at other universities and in other communities, to introduce the Chinese language into the curricula of elementary and secondary schools, and to contribute to the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
